Monsignor John Barugahare's journey to priesthood is a reflection to his unwavering dedication and perseverance. Born on January 8, 1931, in Rutaka Village, Mitooma District, to Theresa Kabuhoko and Marco Kafukuzi, a catechist, Barugahare's early life was marked by tragedy, losing his mother, brother, and two sisters in one year. This setback forced him to drop out of school, but he later resumed his education at P.2 in 1945.
Despite facing numerous challenges, including being denied entry into the minor seminary due to his age, Barugahare remained resolute in his pursuit of the priesthood. His breakthrough came in 1955 when Bishop John Mary Ogez allowed him to join Kitabi Seminary. Barugahare's time at the seminary was fruitful, and he was ordained a priest on December 10, 1967, at the age of 36.
As a priest, Barugahare was known for his strict discipline and love for teaching. He served as the Rector of St. Mukasa Preparatory Seminary Mushanga for nine years, where he mentored many young seminarians, including notable figures like Hon. Magyezi Raphael and Dr. William Muhiirwa. His students affectionately nicknamed him "Leo" (lion) due to his strict nature.
Barugahare's legacy extends beyond his role as a priest. He played a significant part in promoting education in Mbarara Archdiocese. He laid the foundation for Uganda Martyrs Primary School and oversaw the expansion of St. Mukasa Preparatory Seminary. Additionally, he started Bishop Ogez Secondary School in Bushenyi, which has become a pillar in the education system of Mbarara Archdiocese.
Throughout his career, Barugahare composed around 100 songs, many of which are still sung in churches across the western region. His dedication to his faith and community earned him the position of Vicar General, and he worked tirelessly to re-awaken Laity Councils and promote the Catholic faith.
