Sisters of Our Lady of Good Counsel Mbarara is a Diocesan Institute with its Generate on Nyamitanga Hill and the Mother House at Kyabirukwa, Isingiro District. TThey were founded by the Sisters of our Lady of Good Counsel of Chicoutimi (Canada) who were invited to Mbarara in 1937 by Bishop Francis Xavier Lacoursier.
On 26 September the Congregation officially became a local Institute of the Diocesan Right. Since then, it has had several Superiors General, the current one is Sr. Grace L. Kyomugisha. The vast majority of Sisters in this congregation are Ugandans while others come from Tanzania, Kenya, and Rwanda. The Institute has two Formation Houses: a Pre-postulancy, Postulancy and a Novitiate. The Institute has communities in Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda.
Sisters from this Institute, render services in areas of health and education, the congregation is in charge of one of the Diocesan Hospitals that is, Uganda Martyrs Hospital in Ibanda District. A good number of Sisters offer counselling services to people living with HIV/AIDS in various Health Units. In education sector a good number of the Sisters do teach in Catholic founded schools.
